Punch Brothers Cambridge Concert reviews
The greatest show of my life.
First off, please Ticketmaster, I would like to change my stupid nickname I picked one night after a bad concert experience with this one woman, okay?
This was my first show of theirs in many years due to reasons that made me miss many acts including Punch Brothers. There is simply nobody who can compare with Punch Brothers.
The setlist was incredible, the sound was too, and lines from certain songs just *jumping out* at me more viscerally than ever, it seemed. Opening with We Take Care of Our Own, then Wrecking Ball really building up the emotion, they then went into the one song I hoped the most they would play - Badlands, probably the greatest song they have ever written.
As the show increased, Punch Brothers seemed further and further ELATED! This was beautiful to see. And Backstreets. Backstreets was SO powerful that I cried almost through the whole song. Tremendous!
It almost seemed Punch Brothers and the band would continue but, really, it was all they could do. They were extremely elated, they played for 3 hours and 9 minutes of one of their greatest California shows ever if not the best *period*, an extremely moving, genuinely spiritual experience, truly one of the greatest nights of my LIFE!
And now the review...
His nephew Jake really did a fine job, and much of this show, as the superb Wrecking Ball album, was about spirits that live on; such a great tribute was paid to Clarence, it was like he was there in spirit. The E Street Band continues to live on despite the deaths of first Danny and then Clarence of course.
I was REALLY excited, as they have always been my favorite. The highlights just continued, and although I don't love the song Waitin' On A Sunny Day, it wound up being more fun that I thought it might be, and the kid got on stage and it was pretty wild.
As I was about to go for a much-needed bathroom break (they came on not at 7:30 but around 8:15!), thinking Jack of All Trades was next (I don't like that song much), instead they went into the longest Thundercrack. It was an incredible surprise! Left during jack of All trades intro, made it back as I heard the opening drums of Murder Inc., another first for me of them live (yes, it had been WAY too long!).
The encores were also superb, especially the surprise of Rosalita, which made me think to myself there was no single place better to be that night! there just wasn't! Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out contained the most beautiful, moving montage above of pictures with Clarence that drove the crowd crazy and surely many including myself, to tears. The "Apollo Medley" was stunning; hearing for the first time in concert The Rising was, the version was just amazing, then Lonesome Day, We Are Alive...the opening harmonica notes of Thunder Road were positively thrilling.
BTW the intros were during Thundercrack, and Patti was not there. This gave Garry a chance for a beautiful bass run during intros as the last introduced. (he sort of was earlier by Punch Brothers telling him he can't do do for him what Patti can!)
Even with Punch Brothers and the E Street Band (now about 16 members including Punch Brothers, I think?) - even when you feel you can't have everything, they give you everything.
